In order to increase your speed for football you must have a smart strength training and athletic performance program. For the sake of this article I have included 2 hard hitting speed developing drills to cover the strength portion of your football strength training program. In order to build significant speed and power for the game of football you must engage in intense explosive lifts that challenge your body from head to toe which in turn will initiate a rapid response from your body's nervous system. As a professional I can tell you that there is no better way to do that than by implementing the use of kettlebell training into your football workouts. Check out the following 2 kettlebell drills that I have included here for you.
1. The Kettlebell Swing: This particular kettlebell lift is one of the more basic strength endurance lifts that you can perform with the ancient kettlebell in order to build tremendous core strength, stamina, and overall speed! The reason this particular lift is so effective is because it involves the use of hundreds of your muscles at once in order to properly pull it off. This lift integrates so many of your muscles at once that you will be surprisingly challenged from the initial set of only doing 20 or 30 repetitions with even a moderately heavy bell. You see you perform the lift by forcefully swinging the bell back and forth from between your legs up to chest level like a pendulum. This arc like swinging motion causes you to really have to utilize your larger core muscle groups consisting of your hips, abdomen, back, shoulders, and everything else in between. This exercise is also tremendous for grinding out and conditioning the muscles of your posterior chain (like your glutes, hamstrings, lower back) which are also part of your sprinting powerhouse!
2. The Kettlebell Snatch: This particular kettlebell lift is very dynamic in nature and is even more effective for the development of your fast twitch muscle fibers which are necessary for your football speed performance. This football strength training drill is executed with a single kettlebell. To execute the lift you must vertically pull the bell from either the ground or from between your legs up to a held position above your head in one smooth forceful movement. In pulling the bell you must engage your hips and knees in a technique that is known as the hip snap in order to create the force to pull the bell to a position just lateral to your head. This is known as the high pull position. Once you elevate the bell to this position then you must complete the lift by vertically punching your palm towards the sky in order to lock it out overhead. This explosive action is what will help you to develop some serious football speed for your game day performance. If you haven't already taken the time to implement kettlebell training into your football speed and strength workouts then you are holding back your progress. Remember that most any athlete can train hard, but only champions train smart!
