Carved Hiking Sticks - Make Your Own

What do you need to make your own hand carved hiking sticks? A
pocket knife and a walk in the woods. Be sure your knife is
solidly built. You don't need more than a three-inch blade, but
it needs to be strong enough that it won't snap on you when you
hit a knot in the wood. A locking blade is a good idea too, if
you value your fingers.

Sharpening Collegiate American Football Workout Drills

Hand off drill

Drills practicing fundamentals like effective hand offs can make the difference between a mediocre team and an excellent one. One great hand off drill starts by having two separate lines of players facing each other: line A and line B. At the coaches signal player A leaves line A running with the football towards line B. In sync with that first player, a second player leaves line B, when they meet player A passes to player B. At the point of the hand off another player leaves line A and runs towards player B, who hands off the ball to the new player. This drill should perform in a seamless motion. Practice this drill every day to ensure that your running backs are effective on their hand offs.

Practice can help turnovers

There is a golden rule in football defense, get the ball to the offensive team as quickly as possible. Win your games by training your defense to use a strong tackle that strips the ball from the opponent. This drill practices with two players. Have the defender move up on the offensive player, trust his arms back and then forward with his fists clenched. The defender will practice stripping the ball by bringing his hands up quickly with a clenched fist to grab the opponent and as he does so to aim to knock out the football. This drill is most effective if you start it slow focusing on the motions needed to be effective, and then speed up over time.

Secrets to a good hand off

Learning the basics in a handoff is essential to a strong offense. We will explain this in a common scenario between a quarterback and a running back. A good hand off starts with the running back giving a target to the quarterback, this can be done in the running back keeping his arms flat against his body, one arm low and the other high creating an open square or target around the chest for the quarterback to slide the ball in. When the running back receives the football he clamps down both arms hard on the football to protect it. Now that the running back has the ball when he leaves the quarterback he should remain low to the ground in order to react quickly on the field.

Not only will it add muscle to your body and increase your strength, it will also help you to increase your maximum power. Maximum power should be the goal of your training, because it involves muscle strength and muscle excursion during play. This exertion will help you as a football player to execute your skills on the field with speed and force. Weight lifting can cause injuries, and as such we highly recommend having a professional coach on hand during weightlifting sessions. You trainer will also help you accomplish your weightlifting goals and teach you new techniques.

Beginner Soccer Drills - How To Take Your Game To The Next Level

Beginner soccer drills are so important in the overall development of young players not just because they are a starting point but because they will shape the players style later down the track. Young players by their very nature are keen and eager to learn but can also be brash and they lose concentration.
This is evident during training and this is where a good coach knows when it's time to pull in the reins. A little latitude needs to be given but not too much as to disrupt the rest of the team. In this article, we will present some proven beginner soccer drills that can be the catalyst for taking a young player's game to the next level of development.  
#1. The Passing Drill
One of the most fun beginner soccer drills is called the passing drill. This involves placing two cones down 10 yards apart and then having 5 players line up behind each cone. One player should start with the ball at one of the two lines and then pass the ball to the player facing them on the opposite line.
After the first player passes the ball they should run around the outside of the cones and head to the back of the line that they passed the ball to. This repeats until all of the players have had a chance to pass the ball a few times each.
When you are first starting out with this drill you should allow your players two touches each on the ball. There first touch should be used to trap the ball, but at the same time to prepare the ball for a pass.
#2, Keeping The Ball Close To The Body
It is important for the ball to remain close to their body after the first touch so that they keep good control of the ball. This is one of the beginner soccer drills that teaches players how to keep control of the ball. The second touch should be the pass to the other line.
When young players are learning how to pass the ball it is important to teach them to kick the ball with the inside of their foot. This will help them play a clean pass to the opposite line that also has a significant amount of power behind it.
#3. Learning One Touch Play
After your players have mastered this drill by using two touches you can progress to the next part of the drill. This involves players only using one touch. This means that every time that a player touches the ball they will immediately pass it to the other line without stopping the ball first.
This requires players to move extremely quickly to the other line because it creates a fast paced drill. This is one of the more basic beginner soccer drills that you can use to teach young soccer players how to pass a ball. It will help them to learn the fundamentals of passing in the game of soccer!

Though running drills can be a big help to your game, many people complain the most about the running. Because in the end, the team or players that are the fastest are the ones that win the championships. Running has a final help to your team, and that is learning how to push beyond your limits, you will be surprised how often that happens in football, and in life

Foot Ball Drills

Angle tackling

The reason for angle tackles is simple, cover the shortest area to get to the tackle, but there is still a great need to practice this technique. This can be done by having a player run with the ball on a straight line with the defender at any angle. As the opponent comes toward the defender he will need to adjust his body position and shorten the angle, put his foot in front of the opponent, and make sure that he put his head in front of the opponent. The tackle is completed as the defender wraps his hands tightly around the opponent, straightens his hips and pushes the opponent to the ground or off sides.

Football tackling 101

It has been stated many times that a defensive teams win games, and the most fundamental part of a defensive team is performing a great tackle. Tackling can be fun and exhilarating, but done improperly and it can be dangerous. Here are three important steps to practice:

First is to cut off your opponent by placing yourself directly in front of them. You can do this by placing your foot between your opponent's feet. At the same time you want to bring your arms back in anticipation for the next phase.

Second, thrust your other foot again squarely in front of your opponent and with all the momentum that you have brought to the tackle grab your opponent. As your feet plants your head should be making its first contact. The one golden rule in making a safe tackle is to never, ever lead with or try to tackle with the crown of your head. A great way to insure that you are in the right position is to practice touching your facemask to the football of the opposing player.

Third, throw your hips up and hard as you drive the offensive player backwards. The more momentum that you bring to the table on steps two and three the more effective your speed will be in this last step.

Catching the ball low

Great plays are made through dedicated practice of the fundamentals. Making the plays means that you have practiced the "non-optimal" situation and know how to react to them. Perfect and not so perfect scenarios should constantly run at football practice. Here are some secrets to making this catch. First, keep your hands down low in a scooping or shovel position; you can even cross your pinkies. This ensures that the ball will not slip through your fingers. Second, keep low to the ground as a reference your knees should be level with your elbows, and if this means that you are down on all fours better a complete and no extra yards than an incomplete pass. Second, bend your knees and get low. Remember, the cardinal rule of catching is to use your hands and not your body. Never use your body to catch a football. And always see the ball through, meaning that you are watching it into the tuck.

Youth Basketball Passing Drills

Passing is the lost art of basketball. Getting the ball to your teammates at the correct time and place is as important as being a good shooter or a lock down defensive stopper. Maintaining possession of the ball and running an effective youth basketball offense can only be executed through solid passing. A perfectly placed pass for an assist can be as thrilling as an acrobatic shot or a deep three-pointer.
For youth basketball players of all ages, just like ball handling and shooting, you will become a better passer the more you practice the proper basketball passing drills. Even the most experienced players miss chances to score because they are not aware of open teammates, or if they do see their teammate they are either not prepared to make the pass, or they make a bad pass.
Similar to ball handling, you must first see the floor so you know when your teammates are open. It's also true that the better you become at ball handling the better you become at passing as you will see the court and teammates better as well as develop a good feel for the ball to deliver quick and accurate passes.
Next, you must be prepared to make your pass quickly before the defense recovers and your teammate is no longer open. Finally, you must deliver the correct pass (chest, bounce, skip) away from your teammate's defender and in the best place for your teammate to be able to act quickly when receiving the pass. For example, if they are open to shoot, your pass should arrive at your teammate's chest area so they can catch the ball seamlessly as they are stepping into their shot.
It's also important that all five players on the floor learn to be effective passers. If you're a good passer from whatever position you play, you will surely see a lot more time on the floor and your teammates will love playing with you.

As the offender runs ahead of the defender, have the defender bring his clenched hands up quickly, and forcefully, as he aims his hand at offender's football. This drill is most effective if you start it slow focusing on the motions needed to be effective, and then speed up over time.

Strength and conditioning: Up Downs

Out of all of the football conditioning drills up downs is one of the most popular. This drill starts by having the players run in place as fast as they can encourage them to get their knees up as high as they can. At the coaches signal the players will drop to the ground and do a push up, and then quickly get back up and start running again. This drill is an excellent workout and should be worked in slowly at first and then increased in intensity and length over time.

Maximum power is different from strength because it is the power that you exert on the field during a play. Conditioning: Five dot jump

Conditioning drills are effective in training and helping athletes be strong and reactive. For this reason, coaches like this drill for its focus on speed and accuracy. In order to execute the drill you will need a place with five dots, either marked on the grass or on a mat, forming an x shape much like the dots for the number five side of dice.

This drill begins with the player starting on two of the outer dots and jumps feet together to the middle dot and then out again to the edge dots separating their feet. The second phase is having the player touch each of the dots with only one foot, and then switch to the other foot. The next step is jumping on all five dots with both feet together. The end step is similar to the first jumping jack step except that this time the player will turn 180 degrees after jumping on the two dots. Remember that speed and accuracy are important on this drill so coaches should start players off slow and then proceed to full speed constantly watching accuracy.

Tips on Chip Shots

The chip shot is one of the easiest to learn in the game. Yet, many recreational players have trouble hitting the short chip shot, even after several golf instruction sessions. In fact, they're so bad, they substitute their putter for wedge, which isn't always wise, as I explain in my golf lessons.
Using a putter when you need a pitching wedge or a sand wedge is, needless to say, a poor decision. It can add strokes to your overall score or cost you a hole in match play. It's a problem you must overcome to lower your golf handicap. If you can't hit a short chip shot well, don't despair. There's help.
The inability to hit a short chip shot is as much mental as physical. To overcome these obstacles, you need to simplify both your mental approach and your physical technique. The next time you have a short chip shot, try using an 8 iron instead of a wedge. It's an approach I sometimes use myself. That's because it works.
Here are 6 keys to chipping as if you were putting that I recommend in my golf lessons:
• Replace your wedge with an 8 iron
• Take a normal putting stance
• Place hands and weight forward
• Hold the club vertically
• Hit the ball off the toe-end of the clubface
• Rock your shoulders to control roll of ball
First, set-up as if your were going to make a long putt. Use your normal putting grip and play the ball back in your stance, off the inside of the heel of your back foot. The 8 iron is ideal for this type of shot because it's short enough to deloft without the club's shaft hitting you during the shot.
Also, keep your hands and weight forward, favoring your front side, as you would if you were hitting a chip shot. Hold the club vertically, so that the club's heel is raised off the ground, enabling you to stand closer to the ball. And spread your elbows
Moving the ball back in your stance and shifting your weight forward positions the ball off the toe-end of the clubhead when you hit it. Using the toe-end will deaden the ball when you make contact. It will also help control the ball's roll.
Hit the ball with a gentle rocking of the shoulders, as you would if you were putting. This technique raises the club several inches off the ground in the backswing and forces you to hit down on the ball slightly, chipping it into the air. Concentrate on maintaining the width of the gap between your elbows as you swing thorough. It also ensures a pure arms-and-shoulders motion.
Using the 8-iron approach takes your wrists out of play. Recreational golfers who have trouble making short chip shots often have overly active wrists. With my approach, you'll eliminate your wrists yet still strike the ball solidly-just keep your head still and focus on making a short, firm follow-through,
You can also use my approach for longer chip shots. Just lengthen your stroke to play the longer shot, as you would if you were hitting a long putt. For extra long chip shots, try using a 5 or 6 iron to get the required roll.
Chip under Target Drill
The key to accurate chipping is keeping the ball low so it runs like a putt when it hits the ground. Here's a drill I use in my golf lessons designed to teach players to keep the ball low.
Lay a club or bag horizontally across two baskets placed about three feet apart. Then, step back a few feet and try chipping under the obstacle toward the hole, using either a wedge or an 8 iron.
To chip under the obstacle, you must deloft the club, which you can do by keeping your hands ahead of the clubhead when you swing. Having a visual obstacle to hit the ball under forces you to develop your ability to keep the ball low. Keep practicing this shot until it becomes second nature
Hitting the short chip shot well-whether you use a wedge or an 8 iron- is a start toward improving your short game, and chopping strokes of your golf handicap. And aren't those the real goals?

Coaching Quarterbacks

#1. Coaches never want to second-guess them or make them look bad in front of their teammates. if you do it makes very difficult for them to be the leader in the huddle. It is vital for the qb to have huddle leadership!

#2. Even in bad situations, find things the quarterback does right. Such as made a good throw bad made a bad read.

Foot Ball Drills

#3. Encourage your quarterback to take chances and to force throws in practice. This tests there ability to get the ball into tight spaces. If he does not do it in practice he will never know if he can make that throw in a game. It does not matter if he throws an interception in practice, this is how he finds out what he can get away with as far as forcing the ball into tight spaces.

#4. In terms of dealing with the press, take the blame for a bad game as much as you can. You can say such things as " We didn't help our qb out very much. I could have called a better game for him.

#5. If the quarterback senses a lack of confidence by the coach he will play the way he feels! All coaches must show confidence in their qb or he will know it.

#6. You can never do enough quarterback footwork and vision drills.

#7. Always stress speed in setting up on the pass drops and the release of the football. The longer he holds the ball the more the pass rush will come.

#8. Make the quarterbacks write down their 5 favorite pass plays. Don't be afraid to use those plays. If you get in a key situation and your qb is struggling, you can call one of his favorite passes?

#9. It is hard to teach the quarterback to throw the before the receiver is open! Again have your qb try to do this in practice.

#10. The quarterback must think like his coach. If you are calling the passes and the plays, he must think like you. You and your QB must spend time in meetings and in the film room talking about football game situations so he can get a feel of how you call the plays.

What you do in your meetings and what you do on the field all tie in with these 10 points.

How to Hit a Baseball - Is the Stride Necessary?

An instructor during my pro days who was teaching me how to hit a baseball told me that if the pitch is straight down the middle, step forward. If the pitch is outside, step toward the outside, and if the pitch is inside, step inside. The problem is that against good velocity, there is absolutely no way for a hitter to wait until after he determines the direction of the pitch before he takes his stride. He will always be late getting to the pitch and will have extreme difficulty with his timing.

Youth Football Coaching - What to Do to Make Your Team a Winner Today - is it New Football Drills?

More Lessons Learned From Coaching Greats

One of the simplest ways to improve your youth football coaching abilities is to copy what other great coaches have done. We aren't talking about new football drills, but philosophies, methodologies and approaches, not a bunch of new football drills. One of the things Hall of Fame Basketball Coach John Wooden did in every off-season was to pick a narrow part of the game of basketball, analyze it, study it and develop a core competency in it. Wooden took things like beating the Zone Press and made it his off-season project for the year. He would seek out the experts in that field, buy every book he could on the subject, go to clinics, go visit zone press teams, study it and seek out coaches advice in the off-season. Coach Wooden did this every year he coached, he chose just one narrow area of the game and made a commitment to excel in that area of the game. Just imagine the wealth of knowledge you would have if you did this for 5-10 years in a row.

Foot Ball Drills

Unfortunately many youth football coaches just don't have the base coaching knowledge like Coach Wooden would have. They know lots of good football drills, but often lack in the priority setting area. But they all know their teams were less than perfect the previous season. Each one of us has to prioritize what the problems were last season and imagine that if corrected which area would have the biggest impact on your team reaching its goals. Is it the Offensive Line? Offensive System? Defensive Line Play? Game Day Management? Practice Organization, Kicking Game?

An area I spent a considerable amount of time and money on last year was athletic development. I spent hundred of hours studying, experimenting and determining what was the best and most efficient use of our time in developing our players "football speed" while incorporating the teaching of football skills and movements. I went to every clinic I could, bought hundreds of dollars in books and tapes and even took a course that cost about 0. This off-season my study has focused on the kicking game, not only on perfecting the mechanics of our kickers and punters, but also improving our PAT, Kick-off, Punt and Return Teams. Again I bought several books, bought all of Coach Kohls kicking DVDs, attended every clinic session I could on kicking and special teams and am now working with an ex-college kicking great. I'm asking lots of questions of special teams coaches and experts I met at all the clinics I attended the last 3 months as well. Coaches don't hand out your e-mail at these clinics if you don't want to answer the questions LOL.

Are you relying on learing a few new football drills or are you looking at a deeper level? Insanity Vs P90X - Which One is Tougher?

On one side you have Shaun T and his INSANITY crew, leaping and lunging and sweating and doing football drills non-stop in their basketball gym. On the other side you have Tony Horton and his test group, drilling each muscle group at a brutal rate, practicing kempo and yoga, lifting weights and doing pull ups. Both are billed as extreme, both are said to be the most intense work out ever put on DVD-but which is really the toughest? If you want the ultimate challenge, which should you do?

First let's try to define by what we mean when we say the 'toughest'. For the sake of this article, we're going to define it as requiring the most physical preparation beforehand, the most willpower and dedication to complete the entirety of the program, and the highest sustained intensity during the workout itself. Some disclaimers: different people might find each of these workouts easier or harder depending on their own strengths. So while INSANITY might be incredibly hard for a weight lifter, it will be easier for someone in track and field. Keep that in mind!

Foot Ball Drills

Let's take a look at each program. P90X is a three month program. It's designed to be implemented in three phases, with the end of each phase/month involving a cool down week during which your body is meant to recover from the 'muscle confusion' that the change in workouts is meant to deliver. There are 12 workouts, and they range from resistance workouts for the major muscle groups to cardio/plyometrics to kempo/yoga/stretching and core. It's a total body workout, and is meant to be practiced six days a week. The workouts can range from 45 minutes to an hour and a half, and require that you own weights, resistance bands and/or a pull up bar.

INSANITY is simpler. Designed to be accomplished in 60 days, it's broken into two main phases, with the second being the 'MAX' phase where the workouts become even more intense and an intermediary week in-between where you focus on Core Cardio and Balance for 6 days in a row, a period Shaun T calls 'Recovery Week'. The workouts are a combination of cardio, plyometrics, calisthenics and different sports drills. There are 10 workouts, and they range from about 45 minutes to over an hour. No equipment is needed, since you use your own body weight throughout.

Which requires the greater physical preparation going in? INSANITY. The INSANITY workouts start at an incredibly intense pace, and don't let up. Even the warm-ups are brutal, and if you don't have that base line conditioning you simply won't be able to keep up. Further, you need to ensure that your joints are resilient and flexible going in; if they're not, the constant pounding that six days/week of jumping, squatting, jogging on the spot and more will simply wear them out. P90X is also incredibly tough, but the bar to enter isn't as high; you can start in a lower state of preparation, and work your way up over the course of the three months.

Which requires the most will power to complete the entire program? P90X. Three months of sustained extreme effort is incredibly draining. Not only that, but most people find INSANITY to be more of a rush; Shaun T is incredibly motivating, and the sheer pace of the program keeps people going on overdrive. Tony Horton breaks up the P90X pace with such slower, more grueling workouts like the hour and a half yoga. The longer, slower pace of P90X requires more willpower to adhere to than INSANITY.

Finally, which has the most intense workouts? This one is a toss-up. Try getting through a Max Cardio session of INSANITY, or keeping up with Tony during the entirety of a Chest & Back workout. Both of these are brutal, and your level of dedication and how hard you push yourself will determine how intense your workout is.

So which is tougher? For my money, I'd say INSANITY. However, P90X is probably harder to complete, and both will kick your butt from here to Sunday if you do them right. In a way, this is like asking, which will kill you faster, a tiger or a lion? Determine what your goals are, and then pick the right program. For maximum cardio/calisthenics development, go for INSANITY. If you're looking to bulk up some as well as get in shape, go for P90X. Either way, good luck. You're going to need it.

All golfers experience golf swing faults on occasion including hook swing faults, push swing faults, slice swing faults and fat golf shot swing faults.  Swing faults are an inevitable part of the game.  However, the secret to becoming a consistently good golfer is to fix your swing faults quickly and not let swing faults become habit.  The most effective way to fix and rid yourself of golf swing faults is to perform golf practice drills designed specifically to address the fault.
Here are a few of our favorite swing fault practice drills.  Practice these drills whenever a golf swing fault creeps into your game and your golf swing fault will quickly become history!

Hook Swing Fault – Hook Tee Drill

BENEFITS: Corrects hooks caused by excessive IN-OUT swing and encourages proper IN-SQUARE-IN swing path.                                                                                                                                                                                                                  .
1.Place two tees and ball left to right diagonally, creating an IN-SQUARE-IN swing path. Allow about 4"x 4" spacing from each tee to ball.
2.Assume normal setup and ball position with 7-iron.
3.Hit ball crisply without hitting tees.
Push Swing Fault – Push Release Drill
BENEFITS: Corrects push shots resulting from "hanging back" after impact. Promotes solid weight transfer, shoulder rotation and release down target line.
1.Place vertical rod flush with heel of left foot.
2.Make full swings ensuring that left hip collides with rod at impact, promoting proper weight shift.
3.At finish, check that shoulders are in-line with rod to evaluate upper body rotation through shot.
Slice Swing Fault – Slice Tee Drill
BENEFITS: Corrects slices caused by OUT-IN swings and encourages proper IN-SQUARE-IN swing path.
1.Place two tees and ball right to left diagonally, creating an IN-SQUARE-IN swing path. Allow about 4"x 4" spacing from each tee to ball.
2.Assume normal setup and ball position with 7-iron.
3.Hit ball crisply without hitting tees.
Fat/Heavy Swing Fault – Right Leg Back Drill
BENEFITS: Promotes solid ball contact and balance. Encourages IN-SQUARE-IN swing path and swing tempo.
1.Assume setup with 7-iron and without ball.
2.Draw right foot back and keep toe on ground.
3.Keep weight on left side.
4.Staying balanced, take 5 to 10 practice swings keeping right foot on toe throughout swing.
5.Continue drill by hitting balls off tee at half-speed with ball positioned off left toe.

Speed Training For Sports Such As Rugby Or Football

For a Winger in Rugby or in Football your speed and your agility are two of your most valuable assets. The best wingers in the world be it at club or international level work on keeping their pace and speed up for as long as they can.

As a winger myself I have a number of drills I do with on my own to help keep my speed going. You are going to need a few things first which you can easily get by doing a search on the internet or even find on eBay.

Foot Ball Drills

These include a weighted vest, ankle weights and a speed parachute pack.

Remember A good warm up before and warm down after each drill is essential.

My First Drill: Ankle Weights Drill

I do full length of the Pitch Sprints with ankle weights on my ankle. As a starter I would say you should try 5sprints a day with this method to get used to it. Perhaps you can start off at 60% pace for your first 2 sprints then gradually increase to 75 then to 85 then full pace sprinting by your 5th Sprint. Your rest periods should be the walk or preferably the jog back to the starting line where you began you will notice you get fitter and lighter when you run without the ankle weights on. For the weights I would suggest 2.5lbs should be fine to start off with and you can gradually increase them as you advance.

The Sessions for the Ankle Weights Drill

3sprints sessions a week will be ideal, sprinting with this drill every other day is the recommended method to enable you and your body to recuperate.

My Second Speed Drill: Weighted Vest Drill

This involves doing full length sprints with a weighted vest on, this might be a bit strenuous on some people so if you do go with this drill I would suggest you ask your doctor first that you are in the right structural shape to utilise this drill. Whatever the case it is not a rush to get as heavy as possible on. Rather it is a slow and steady progression, start of gradually with 5kg in the weights for say every other day of sprints. Then in the next week increase the weights to 7kg and the week after 10kg.

The Sessions for the Weighted Vest Drill

3sprints sessions a week will be ideal. For instance every other day so if you start on Monday then next session should be on Wednesday and the Third should be on Friday. This allows you 24hours in between sessions to allow your body to rest. Just as with the ankle weights drill you should allow yourself the rest in between sprints to be the walk back or preferably jog back to the starting line this will improve your fitness and speed as you progress through the drills and the weights.

My Third Drill: The Parachute Drill

This is a lighter version of the Weighted Vest Drill; it involves you wearing a parachute backpack on your back and doing sprints with it. I tend to use this drill as a warm down after the weighted vest drill. However this drill can also be used on its own especially if you do not have a weighted vest at first. As this Drill is lighter I would say ideally ten sprints every other day should be ideal however rather than doing them 10 at ago what you can do is break them into 5sprints now then have a rest by jogging round the pitch at a slow pace and then do the next 5 straight away.

Final Thoughts

Mental ability, speed, confidence and fitness are all attributes that will be enhanced and developed as you do these drills and I hope these drills help you to leave the competition staring at the back of your boots as you zoom passed them.

NFL Tactics - Making Huge Plays With Tackling and Other Basics

Making and effective Angle Tackle

The reason for angle tackles is simple, cover the shortest area to get to the tackle, but there is still a great need to practice this technique. This can be done by having a player run with the ball on a straight line with the defender at any angle. As the opponent comes toward the defender he will need to adjust his body position and shorten the angle, put his foot in front of the opponent, and make sure that he put his head in front of the opponent. A good tackle is now executed as the defender lunges at the opponent wrapping his arms around his opponent grabbing cloth and completing the tackle by pulling him down or pushing him off sides.

Every football team will have certain plays. It will be essential to learn your part in that play to benefit yourself, and the whole team. Up downs is an excellent conditioning drill that will improve reaction time and endurance. Players will start this drill by running in place as fast as they can, keeping their knees high as possible. At the coaches signal the players will drop to the ground and do a push up, and then quickly get back up and start running again. Because this drill can be very taxing, it is important to increase the time spent at this slowly over time as the player's strength increases.

Lifting weights is a fundamental requirement to improve your football skills. The benefits of lifting weights are found in added strength, but more importantly it will increase your maximum power. Maximum power differs in importance to strength due to the fact that it is exertion during play and not just muscle mass. Strong and powerful execution will enable fast plays, quick action, and recognition on the field. We highly recommend working with a personal trainer when weightlifting to insure that you are doing it properly, and to help you design a program that will fit your position.

Middle School Football Wining Strategies -: Conditioning, Running, Etc

Conditioning: The five dot drill

Conditioning is meant to increase speed, endurance, and reaction time on the football field. The intent of this drill is to increase accuracy, timing, and speed. Setting up this drill is very simple, you will need five markers placed about a foot apart in an x formation with one of the dots being in the center surrounded by four other dots in a square formation.

Foot Ball Drills

The player will start by placing a foot on the back two dots and then jumps together to the middle dot and then out separating his legs to the outer dots, much like you would see in hop scotch. Next the player will jump touching each dot with on leg only, and then switch using the other leg. The next step is jumping on all five dots with both feet together. The last step is the same as the first hop scotch method but this time when the player reaches the other side they will turn around on the two dots. Remember that speed and accuracy are important on this drill so coaches should start players off slow and then proceed to full speed constantly watching accuracy.

Running will increase performance

Running drills are one of the most basic ways that you can enhance your endurance. Though dull and sometimes boring, these running drills will help you play your hardest until the end of the game. Though running drills can be a big help to your game, many people complain the most about the running. Just remember that in the end it is the fastest that win games. Running has a final help to your team, and that is learning how to push beyond your limits, you will be surprised how often that happens in football, and in life

Proper Catching Leads to Great Ball Security

Catching the football properly and effectively is fundamental to a strong offense. There are three steps of a great catch: First, place your hands in front of you with your palms open and thumbs out forming an open triangle for the football. Second, follow the ball with your eyes from the first time you see it in the air until it is securely placed in a tight hold. Third, secure the ball tight and high against your ribs, forearm, and biceps. The problem is that receivers have a tenancy to start looking down the field before they have the ball properly secured. This increases fumbles and turnovers. To prevent this, have two receivers throw to each other and as they catch it have them slow down the motion so that they pause at each catch, follow through and tuck.

Catching the ball high

Because not all throws are perfect you will need to practice making catches that are high or low. Here are some simple steps when making a high catch: The first and most important is that you extend your arms and keep your hands together in a diamond type shape to catch that football. When you have your hands extended you are performing a proper catch, remember, and don't ever catch it with your body. Once you have your hands around the ball, don't take your eyes off the ball but follow it right into your tuck. If you are taking your eyes off for any reason you will lose focus and have a greater chance to miss the pass, or worse, fumble the football.

A Story of My Martical Arts Sparring Shoes and Marriage

If you do any kind of martial arts sparring, you know that protective gear is of the utmost importance. Any man who has the stones to go into a sparring match without a cup on, won't have them for very long. There's protective gear like the heavily padded "foot gloves" that I wear when I'm teaching, so I don't accidentally do a spin kick and take someone's head off when they miss a block. But the protective gear I want to sing the praises of today are the martial arts sparring shoes.
Now, I use the martial arts shoe for two very simple reasons. The first is that after I did a series of practice bits against a wooden "sparring dummy", I walked out of the dojo on several bone-deep bruises in my feet. Now, bruises are the price you pay for any contact sport, including martial arts. Even a little bit of padding would've kept me from walking funny for two days. My friends and co-workers were making fun of my little mincing steps to avoid putting weight on the tops of my feet from a particularly nasty bruise - almost a break in the bone.
The foot has so many small bones. And almost no meat. No fat. No protection. Poor bloodflow. At least mine do. Pain sticks attached to my ankles!
I guess I'm a slow learner. Two weeks later, I did the same practice drill and about pulped my big toe when I mis-judged the distance to the wingchun wooden dummy on a kick - instead of hitting it with the arch of the foot, I did a direct "full force kick" with the point of contact centered on the toe. The joint popped, the toe swelled up to twice its size, and only pure blind luck kept me from having a fracture.
OK, so kicking wooden dummies in bare feet is a dumb idea....
I went looking for things to save me from my own stupidity and found martial arts sparring shoes. Now, those sparring shoes are different from tourney foot pads. They're light enough that you won't develop compensatory habits to adjust for the weight...and while they don't offer as much protection, it's the difference between kicking a wooden dummy with your bare foot and kicking it with a pair of tennis shoes on.
On top of that, they also improve traction on the ground, and stability when doing routines and drills. Given how much I like Kung Fu styles, and how acrobatic they are, that extra traction was very appealing. While it's not fun to be thrown on your ass by a sparring partner, it's even less fun to do it on your own because you slipped.
Plus, to be honest, it was good to come home from a session in the dojo without feeling like I was being a sniveling, whiney brat because my feet hurt. Trust me, these things saved my marriage - my wife was making fun of my new "dance steps" when I was busy beating the crap out of my feet and whining about it when I had to take out the garbage.
Didn't I mention I can dance? That's for another article. She saw Dancing With The Stars and it was over. I don't know what hurts more, learning to tango or kicking that wooden dummy!

Football Lineman Drills

Offensive and defensive linemen are very under appreciated. They rarely get any of the credit they deserve - especially offensive linemen. Yet how well the linemen play usually decides a game. That's why it's so important for each lineman to play well and it's also the reason why football lineman drills are so important.

Different Positions Don't Always Equal Different Football Lineman Drills

Foot Ball Drills

Of course there are different drills for an offensive lineman and a defensive lineman. This is because a defensive lineman always wants to explode and move forward on a play while an offensive lineman may want to explode into and block a defender (for running plays), pull and block a defender (for running plays too), or they want to drop back and protect the quarterback (for passing plays).

However, there are some drills that both sides of ball need to practice. These drills involve improving a player's explosiveness off the ball and a player's agility. Two great football lineman drills are the Tennis Ball Drill and the Combine Agility Drill. One of the many great things about these lineman drills is that they can be practiced on a player's own time.

Tennis Ball Drill

For the Tennis Ball Drill a lineman will need a tennis ball and a person to help out with the drill. The person helping out will hold the tennis ball straight out in from of him/her. The lineman will get into a three or four point stance. At the beginning the player and the helper should be about five yards apart.

The helper should say "hike" or something similar to let the lineman know he has to fire off the ball. Then the helper drops the tennis ball. The lineman has to fire forward and catch the ball before it bounces twice.

Once the drill becomes easy the helper should stand back another couple yards. This process should be repeated several times. The purpose of the drill is to help improve a lineman's explosiveness off the ball.

Combine Agility Drill

Every year college football linemen hoping to go the NFL are asked to do this drill. The drill begins on the fifty yard line with the player facing the sideline. The lineman first opens his hips to the right and runs to the forty-five yard line. He then touches the line with his right hand. Then he opens his hips to the left and sprints to the other forty-five yard line. He touches that line with his left hand and then sprints back past the fifty.

The lineman should then take a thirty second break and then repeat the drill. Drills can be done in bunches of five or more. The purpose of this drill is to improve a player's agility and stamina.

Drills Improve Explosiveness, Agility, and Stamina

There are many different techniques that offensive and defensive linemen have to learn. However, there are some skills that are the same. That's why some football lineman drills can be used for both offensive lineman and defensive lineman. Two football drills that both sides of the ball can practice are the Tennis Ball Drill and the Combine Agility Drill. These drills work on a lineman's explosiveness off the ball, a lineman's agility, and a lineman's stamina.

Conditioning: Five dot jump

Conditioning drills are effective in training and helping athletes be strong and reactive. This drills intention is to help quickness and accuracy on the field which will reduce errors and increase the chances of great plays. In order to execute the drill you will need a place with five dots, either marked on the grass or on a mat, forming an x shape much like the dots for the number five side of dice.

Foot Ball Drills

The athlete starts at the edge of the mat placing their feet on two of the outer dots and proceeds to jump with feet together on the center spot and then out again quickly to the outer dots similar to a simple hop scotch motion. Next the player will jump touching each dot with on leg only, and then switch using the other leg. After this, the player will touch all of the dots with both feet together. The last step is the same as the first hop scotch method but this time when the player reaches the other side they will turn around on the two dots. Players will need to increase their speed and accuracy to be effective with this drill.

Running with the Ball: The Gauntlet Drill

There is nothing more important for offense to learn great ball security. This is especially true for a running back or wide receiver as they will carry the ball more often than others on the field, but it is a good idea for all positions to practice a little ball security. That is why the gauntlet drill was created, to test and practice effective ball security. This drill is set up with one ball carrier, there objective is to run through a group of opponents that try to knock the ball out. The opponents can line up in any scenario, the most common being two lines and the ball carrier must run through them. Run each of the gauntlet drills slow and then speed them up as each player gets better at effective ball security.

Strip Tackling

The faster your defense is at getting the ball back into the offensive's hands the more likely you are to win a game. Forcing a fumble is one of the quickest ways that you can turn the tides and retain possession of the football. A great way to practice is have two players line up, one as the defense, the other with the football as the offense. As the offender runs ahead of the defender, have the defender bring his clenched hands up quickly, and forcefully, as he aims his hand at offender's football. Start the drill slowly, and reward for a strong tackle that effectively tackles and makes an attack to dislodge the offensive players grip on the ball.

Practicing the Hand off

Because hand offs are such a vital part of a running offense, running backs should practice hand off skills every day. One great hand off drill starts by having two separate lines of players facing each other: line A and line B. At the coaches signal player A leaves line A running with the football towards line B. At the same time a player leaves line B, and when they meet in the middle Player A hands off the ball to Player B. At this moment another player leaves line A and accepts a handoff from player B. This drill should perform in a seamless motion. This is a great drill to help running backs practice hand offs, and should be run every day.

Quarterback Fundamentals - How to Properly Throw a Football

Throwing a football with velocity and accuracy requires proper mechanics and a lot of practice. Today I am going to give you some tips on how you can set yourself apart from the competition and throw a football with ease.

Secret #1. Keep your eyes on the target at all times. So many times young quarterbacks try to visualize the flight path of the ball instead of constantly looking at your target. Your brain will automatically tell your arm how hard to throw the ball to get it there.

Foot Ball Drills

Secret #2. Push off your back foot. A lot a fower in throwing comes from your back foot. I always tell quarterbacks they should finish with their weight on their front foot. Make sure you also step your front foot toward your target. Never have your front foot completely closed when stepping at your target. There should be no hop or big step forward, but a nice smooth throwing motion.

Secret #3. When winding up to throw the football, make sure your front shoulder is facing your target. This will give you the energy and the velocity in order to throw a great pass and achieve a perfect spiral.

Secret #4. Develop quick feet. A lot of athletes don't realize that to become a great quarterback, you need good feet. Practice different cone drills and drops to increase your foot speed. This will help you set up in the pocket quicker and achieve a better throw. It will also allow you to scramble away from defenders and throw on the run.

Putting Training. Put the Time in and Drastically Improve your Game

It is well documented that a putt of 5 to 7 feet are the putts we expect to make, yet have the most trouble with. These are the putts we need to improve on. Anyone can sink a 3 footer. If you're more than 8 feet away, the percentage of a putt sinking go down drastically to where you can accept that you will have to more than likely make a 2nd putt.



So the 4 to 6, 5 to 7 foot shot will be where we want to spend our time practicing. It is a fact that the Pros only sink about 50% of their putts from 5 to 7 feet, so there is no point in getting to upset with yourself when you are missing these putts, but we can improve this, so lets practice and see if we can improve our success rate for the 5 to 7 foot putt.



Once on the practice putting green. Grab a bucket of balls and lets get started. Start with the balls about 5 feet from the hole. We will be keeping 2 things in mind as we putt. Our alignment and our stroke.



It is very important to have the correct alignment so we can get a strait shot. When we have our alignment fixed, we can then go on to focus on the stroke.



If you are missing strait putts with no break, your alignment is slightly off or your stroke is off. If you are missing breaking puts, your stroke may be good, but your speed may be off. For this drill, find an area without a break. We will fix our strait putts before being concerned with the breaking putts.



There are hundreds of putting training aids for sale these days. The Odyssey putter employees a 2-ball technology that aids in alignment which is as I described, the most important part of putting. However, the Odyssey putter is quite expensive and you don't need to spend $239 to improve your putting. What I have found works best is a neat little aid called the 2-Way Putter Alignment System. Its a small metal gizmo with a magnet on the base that allows the 2-Way to snap right on to your existing putter head. line it up over the ball or behind in the traditional 2-Ball mode and you have the 2-ball technology to use for putting practice. I recommend practicing with either the Odyssey 2-Ball putter, or the 2-Way Putter Alignment System, because the 2-Ball technology is without a doubt incredibly effective. As the 2 white circles that make up the 2-Ball technology pass through with the stroke, an imperfection in the alignment of your putting stroke shows up like a sore thumb. This is quality feedback to the individual desiring to improve their putting.



Now We start putting, keeping our 2 concerns in mind. Stroke and Alignment. Align the putter head square as best you can towards the hole. The 2-Way will help here. Remember, this is the where most of us go wrong and takes the most time and effort in practice to correct. Once you master the alignment, the improvement will be huge. Now make sure the putter head is going strait back on the swing. There cannot be any movement toward or away from your body.



Lets set yourself a goal. We must Sink 50 in a row from between 4 to 7 feet. This is going to be hard to achieve, but it is possible. Remember, if you miss a single putt, you have to start over at 1.



This teaches us to putt under stress. You know how you will feel as you get into the 40's. You will feel the pressure and you have to press on and sink the rest or you go back to 1. That's pressure. This will help you improve your concentration and your putting stroke.



As you improve your stroke, you will notice that you will become more and more confident in the short putt to the point where you will be able to step back to 7 and 8 feet and farther with a greater confidence in your putting ability.



This putting drill can be done anywhere. If you are at home or have a slow day in the office. You can practice on the carpet. The point is, Alignment and Stroke. Work on that and use the technique described and before you know it, you will be an impressive putter. And its all about being impressive.

1. The Kettlebell Swing: This is the base strength endurance lift that is great for overall conditioning and building tremendous core strength. This lift is performed by you swinging the bell from between your legs up to chest level. The pulling motion of swinging the iron bell incorporates hundreds of muscles and challenges your cardiovascular system more than anything you have tried with in other form of weightlifting. You must execute a hip snap motion by flexing and extending at both your hips and knees in a continuous and fluent motion in order to build the necessary momentum to execute this lift. 2. The Single Arm Overhead Kettlebell Snatch: This particular lift is gruesome in it's intensity! This is probably at the top of the lifts for superior kettlebell workouts. 3. The Kettlebell Front Squat: For this kettlebell drill you can use a single bell or two bells of equal weight. From the floor between your legs simply clean the kettlebells to your chest. Make sure your squat stance is set and stable. From here simple perform a front squat going down until your elbows touch your knees. This is how you know you have good depth in the squat. Football can easily be touted as the king of all sports. Almost every nation on this planet is associated with the football body, FIFA. Such a huge popularity of this sport carries with itself the intense competition at all levels.

Therefore, it becomes quite imperative that players are well trained to compete in this global arena. Thus, coach's role comes into play. It is very important that the coach devises a properly planned training program so that his players' efficiency and skills can be developed.

Foot Ball Drills

Coaches around the world employ various drilling exercises. Some of them are mentioned below:
Drills:

1) Ball Control: Ball control is the first and foremost important thing that a budding soccer player has to develop if he/she wants to play at professional level. First touch is an integral part of keeping the ball in your possession. You must move towards the ball, reducing the chances of ball interception. Your body weight must be on the non kicking foot while getting behind the ball. As the ball comes to you, withdraw your kicking foot slightly on impact. Never rush. Repeat this exercise over and over again to gain control over the ball.

2) Passing: Using the inside of the foot is the best way to pass the ball, as it is the flattest part of the foot. Make sure that your knees are bent. Weighing, i.e. the force with which you kick the ball determines the accuracy of the pass. A well balanced movement and eyes on the ball till the very last moment would go a long way in improving your passing.

3) Heading: Heading is an important skill that you must develop to control the ball when it's air borne. Using your forehead is the best way to head the ball as it gives you a better control over the ball. Never take your eyes of the ball while heading as it would lead to inaccuracy. The key element is your positioning. Get in line with the ball while keeping your head, neck and back in straight line. Attack the ball rather than waiting for the ball to come to you.

4) Shooting: Combination of power and accuracy determines the effectiveness of your shot. Top part of the foot is the best place to hit the ball with power. The non kicking foot plays the anchor role while shooting. It is this foot which provides balance. Try standing on your non kicking foot for several seconds to improve the skill. Keep this foot as close to the ball as possible while taking a shot. Approach side on. Timing and control should be developed first as power will follow. Make sure that you practice shooting with both feet.

5) Dribbling: Dribbling is the most sought after skill among football players as it helps them to steer pass the defense. Body swerve is one such skill. While moving with ball inside of your foot, change your foot position in such a manner that it falls on the outside of your foot. Begin this exercise with standing position and then as you gain confidence, try this while running with ball. Develop the skill and you'll find it much easier to change direction leaving the defender of the opposite team confused.

Remember, you cannot develop these skills over a day's time. Practice, practice and more practice - that's the mantra to become a great football player.

The Ways to Serve in Tennis

Many youth football coaches don't spend a lot of time with special teams, which is a huge mistake. With proper practice priorities and a good practice methodology, every youth coach should have plenty of time to devote to developing good special teams.

While we are proponents of the onside or "pooch" kick for every kickoff, until the game is no longer in doubt, we know many coaches don't agree with that and would prefer to put the ball in the hands of the other teams best player "in space" and take their chances.

Repping the deep kick coverage can be quite a chore and often results in injured players. Here are some ideas to rep it during football practice without banging your kids all up:

Deep Kick Coverage Reps

One simple way to practice covering kickoffs is to drill it going horizontal on your field, using the yard lines as boundaries for your drills. You can set one kick coverage player every 5 yards, squarely in the middle of every 5 yard marking. Start this drill with each coverage player lined up on the sidelines facing the opposite sidelines. To simulate blocking, you can have one offensive player set up as a blocker with a hand shield, 10 yards in front of each defender. Have your kicker kick with the cover team sprinting on the kick and staying in their 'lanes' for the first 15 yards. The defenders initial goal is to sprint in his lane and avoid contact with the blocker with the shield. If the defender can not avoid contact without going out of his boundary lane, he would execute a swim, rip or other 2 handed hand move to move off the blocker.

Adding a Return Component

If you are using the recommended "keep in front of/keep the runner inside" kick coverage technique (keep the runner in front of, and inside of the defender) you can add a returner and test your cover kids ability to keep the returner inside and in front of themselves. The keys are to make sure the cover players can avoid or get past initial resistance and take proper pursuit angles under control. Do not let the cover kids tackle the returner, have them fit on him or tackle to thud, not to the ground.

Covering kicks needs to be practiced but if you do it full speed and tackle to the ground with full blocking, you are asking for trouble. Drilling coverage in the above fashion will allow your defenders the repetitions of avoiding and coming off blocks while practicing proper pursuit techniques. Leave the tackling for your tackling drills.

If you can't practice on a real field with markings, use cones or practice jerseys as boundaries. Coaching Youth Football well is more than having a few good football plays, it means you are setting good priorities and practicing special teams in a way that simulates what is going to happen in a game without the full danger of injuries. This is also a very good conditioning drill if you need to build up endurance in your team.

The kettlebell is an ancient strength and conditioning device that has been around for over three centuries. It involves a movement based style of lifting that is great for helping you to develop tremendous core power and overall leg strength for optimal athletic performance.

By engaging in the most basic kettlebell lifts such as swings, snatches, and jerks you condition your core and legs to respond in a more consistent and forceful manner to the stress you are placing on your body. The muscles of your posterior chain (back, hips, glutes, hamstrings) are responsible for your power production and these kettlebell lifts are terrific for the development of those areas. This is explosive training at it's best my friend.

Plyometric Training For Explosiveness!

The other ingredient in your formula for power production involves the implementation of plyometrics. Plyometrics are training exercises that generate powerful short burst contractions of work and are designed to initiate the stretch shortening cycle (SSC) of your muscles and other related connective tissues. Some examples of these drills may include skips, bounds, box jumps, and clapping push ups. These are all examples of plyometric training drills which are all great for helping you to achieve superior leg power. By combining these with the strength of the ancient kettlebell you stand to gain a high level of athleticism that you yourself probably never thought possible!

Running Drills: A Way of Life

If you have more energy at the fourth quarter then your opponent then you have won, and the best way to get endurance are running drills. Running drills will help you gain stamina so that you will be able to play to your full extent throughout the game. Teams, or individuals, that do not complain throughout the running drills will be better off and better prepared for a game. Whether you are tired, exhausted, and ready to throw up, if you keep running your added strength will help you win games. Running has a final help to your team, and that is learning how to push beyond your limits, you will be surprised how often that happens in football, and in life

Foot Ball Drills

Some fundamentals of ball security

One of the fundamental aspects of running with a football is ball security. Nothing is worse for your offensive team then turning it over carelessly to the other team in a fumble. There are four points to protecting the football. The first point is the claw, meaning that your fingers are wrapped over the tip of the football. The second point is making sure that your forearm is wrapped tightly on the outer rim of the football. The third point is securing the other point of the football with your bicep making sure that it is right up against it. Last point is to hold the back of the football right up against the ribcage and as you run keep it high and tight. Practice holding the football and having defensive players try and knock out the football by any means possible. As your ball carrying continues to improve you will insure less turnovers and greater success on the field.

Water on and off the field

Dehydration should never appear on the football field if both the players and coaches have good habits. Every player should have a water bottle close so that they can take quick water breaks or at least a swallow here and there. Water should never be used as a motivational or reward type basis. When players are hydrated and energized they will practice harder and learn more.

Receivers: Ball Security Drill

Catching the football properly and effectively is fundamental to a strong offense. There are three steps of a great catch: First, place your hands in front of you with your palms open and thumbs out forming an open triangle for the football. Second, keep your eyes on the ball through the entire catch. Third, secure the ball tight and high against your ribs, forearm, and biceps. Many receivers can get into a bad habit of looking away from the ball before it is stored away properly. Taking your eye off the ball increases incomplete passes, fumbles, and turnovers. To prevent this, have two receivers throw to each other and as they catch it have them slow down the motion so that they pause at each catch, follow through and tuck.
