Cross Blocking In Youth Football

The key to the cross block is making sure the two linemen working the cross block work well together. In most schemes, the outside offensive lineman attacks the inside players blocking target first, then the inside offensive linemen comes behind the outside offensive lineman to block the outside offensive lineman's initial blocking target. It is important that there is very little depth gained by the inside offensive lineman, he has to mesh just off the heels of the outside offensive lineman, hence the need for great teamwork.

Obviously for the youth football lineman this is something you would not teach until they were very solid doing the base blocking techniques, know their base blocking rules and only after you have them set in positions. You would practice this against tall dummies with the two partners working with each other exclusively, making sure the head placement was on the inside of the defender for our inside offensive lineman and outside the defender for out outside offensive lineman.

Unlike other offenses we do not cross block on specific plays, but we do allow our players to cross block if we see it would give us an advantage and we make a specific call. When you want to cross block just add a "tag" to the play, something like "Creek or Cable" anything with a C in the front to let the 2 kids at the point of attack know they are going to cross block.

We rarely cross block and teach it based on the age and experience level of the kids. I had an age 8-10 team with about 50% veterans, that was a team cross blocking made sense with. Nearly all my 11-12 or 13-14 age teams learned to cross block as the season progressed.

This technique is also a nice change up for even your two wideouts like in our Mesh Formation. Stalk blocks tend to be as successful as the quality of the players performing them, cross blocks can foul up the keys of the defensive backs and provide your receivers with easy blocking angles even on wide sweep plays.

If you have the right age and experience level and your youth football team is progressing well with your base schemes, the cross block may make sense. Coaching youth football well means you have to figure out if your team meets the criteria or not.

Angle tackling

It is a great idea to practice angle tackles with your defense because not all tackles are made with the opponent right in front of you. Set up a simple drill with two players, on as the offense with the ball running in a straight line, the other as the defender running towards him at some angle. This means that quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, etc have gone through the motions several times and know how to react to situations on the field. One situation that most offensive players will face is the low catch. One not so perfect scenario is a low passed catch. First keep the pinkies together down low to make a shovel. This ensures that the ball will not slip through your fingers. Football Wide Receiver Training - Short Game

The purpose of this wide receiver training drill is to improve the wide receivers short game, while building leg strength and stamina.

Executed properly the receivers should make more catches and increase their yards after catch performance.

For the best results when doing this training drill, have a quarterback throwing the ball. The quarterback should deliver the passes on target, high, low and behind the receiver, simulating real game conditions. Developing the receiver's hand to eye coordination, improving the receiver's confidence and focus.

Have the QB watch your foot movement and your head and shoulder fakes. Keep working the basics and you should see your football skills improve.

This training drill is very effective for the slant and inside crossing routes over the middle.

Need to Improve the Toughness of Your Running Backs in Youth Football?

The Gauntlet drill helps us develop youth running backs. It is a drill that has been around for at least 40 years but is one that still has value in teaching kids today. It is used today at the youth, high school and even college levels.

Here is how we do it:

Line up 2 rows of players facing each other, just 4 feet apart.
A running back is set up so he receives a snap just 2 yards from the opening of the 2 lines.
Once the back takes the snap and "seats" the ball, he has to explode through the 2 lines of players running at full speed.

The players in the 2 lines job is to slap at the ball, punch it from behind and pull on arms to create a fumble without stopping or impeding the runner.

Once the running back makes it through the gauntlet he runs the ball to the coach and goes to the end of the line of the gauntlet.

The next running back then is taken from the front of the line to take the next snap.

The key points for the running backs is to make sure both points of the ball are covered, he is running full speed, running low, keeps his head and eyes up and he keeps his feet moving.

This drill teaches our backs: ball protection and acceleration and helps us coaches tell who has power and who doesn't. This drill tells you who your real backs are, not races or sprints.

You can add nuances to the drill like having 2 coaches with hand shields at the end of the gauntlet. The coaches are facing each other and squeeze the back as he tries to run through them. The back must stay low and accelerate to make it past these 2 coaches.

If you have a lot of hand shields, you can have all the players on the gauntlet line take one and form a tight fit about 2 feet apart that the running backs have to run through.

The gauntlet is a tried and true football drill that still makes sense for youth football players today. Remember you can have the best drawn football plays in the world, but your back will still have to run through contact at some point, this drill teaches that.

Football Agility Drills

In every sport it's important for players to be somewhat agile. In football it's very important for most of the players to be very agile. For this reason football players are often required to complete football agility drills in practice.

You've probably seen football players running through tires. You also may have seen football players running over blocks and around other obstacles. These are all football agility drills that help a player improve his balance and agility.

But there are many other drills that football players can do in practice as well. These drills are effective whether they are being used for youth football agility drills or professional football agility drills.

Part of being agile is being able to start and stop quickly. Since football is played in spurts of only a few seconds at a time, being able to explode into motion is very important.

Players can be helped with starting and stopping simply by running short sprints in practice everyday. Not only will this help them with their agility but it will also help them with their physical conditioning.

A more specific running drill that also helps with conditioning and agility are shuttle runs. Shuttle runs require a player to run a certain distance, turn and run back, and then run another longer distance. The distance keeps getting longer and each time the player must run back to the place where he began.

For example, the player has to run 10 yards, go back, run 20 yards, and then go back, then 30 yards, etc. Not only does this help improve a player's stamina and endurance but it also helps the player learn to take-off and explode into action.

Another one of the great football agility drill involves working one-on-one with a player. So it can't be done with the team as a whole during practice. For this drill all you need is a step and a weighted ball. You may want to use a football instead of a weighted ball, that's good too.

First, have the player step-up onto the step and balance himself on just one leg. Then have him slowly return back to the ground. He should do 2 sets of 20 step-ups for each leg. His movements should be slow and deliberate and his body should be under control at all times.

Once the player has mastered stepping-up, begin throwing him a weighted ball while he is standing on the step (with one leg). The player should catch the ball and then throw it back without losing his balance. This should be done in 2 sets of 20. Remember, you can also use a football for this drill instead of a weighted ball.

Having solid agility is a must for football players. That's why it's important for football players to perform football agility drills in practice. These drills should help the players improve their ability to burst into action, keep their balance, and change directions. All of these abilities are needed on the football field for just about every play.
