Like most aspects of the game, fixing a golf slice won't be able to happen overnight. A methodical look at the likely infected area will bring the cause of that dilemma to the surface. Study some of these time-tested tips on how you can take slicing the ball out of your game.
You should first know...even using the wrong club for the shot can produce a negative effect. But we'll turn our attention on the swing itself.
Of all the logical causes, the position you take at address is the most conventional.
A "square" stance at address is widely accepted as the proper way to line yourself up. If your left foot slides forward toward the ball, the possible result will be an open club face which results in a ball flight to the right. The left foot needs to be lined directly under the left shoulder. Apply this to the shoulders and hips as well for the accurate position. Getting all these "square" removes all doubt that the ball will launch where you want it to go - straight down the fairway or at the pin.
To get off on the right foot to fixing a golf slice, look at your stance and move on to looking at your grip. Clutch the club too tightly and the club head flies open at the critical impact point. Grip it too lightly and the club head has a tendency to wobble as you come down from the top. This too can generate slicing or hooking.
Grip pressure is one thing, but the position of your hands is also essential. A "neutral" grip works well for most amateurs. Finding out what type of grip you have is relatively easy. Pick up a club and hold it like you are ready to take a swing. Take a look and see where your left hand is. You are right on target if you see either two or three knuckles. Change your grip if you don't see the knuckles. This is the accurate position of where your hand should be. In all likelihood, this will probably feel a little awkward to you. Hit at least 20 balls by focusing solely on your hand position. If the balls are not flying straight, change a thing or two in the grip until they do. Once the desired ball flight is achieved, always remember where your hands were on the grip so that you can repeat it.
There are a great deal of variables in fixing a slice but none are as vital as how fast you swing the club. Power does not come from the arms. Ask any pro and he'll tell you that golf is practically the only game there is where the slower you swing the further the ball goes. Do a mental look at the top of the swing and pay particular attention to not allowing the hands to take over. When you lead with your hands, an open club face with be the result at impact. Hips, hips, hips. Stamp that on your swing memory. Smooth flowing hips and the proper timing completes a reliable swing.
The tell-tale sign that you need work on fixing a golf slice is right at your feet. Let's look at the divot. If the divot is in the 10 o'clock position or worse as you look down the fairway or at the pin, you'll get a good picture of how badly you are coming "over the top." Simply make a conscious check of your posture and distribution at address. Fixing a golf slice is all about being "square" - at address and with the club face when you meet the ball.
Always remember, there really isn't a contraption or widget on the market that is going to go farther in helping your game than identifying the concern yourself.
