Linebackers require more work than any other position on the defense. They have so many different jobs to do. Linebacker drills must teach players to tackle, defeat blocks, cause turnovers, and cover the pass.
Use a set of Every Day Drills for your Linebacker drills to be as effective as possible. These drills consist for 4 or 5 drills that are done every single day by your Linebackers. The drills you are doing teach the fundamental skills needed to be a good Linebacker.
Every Day Linebacker Drills
There are hundreds of quality drills for Linebackers, and you must decide which drills fit best for your players. Each system, team, and level of football will be different.
Tackling
You should include one drill for tackling, every day. An open field tackling drill creates a more realistic picture of what your players will see. Set up a 10x10 yard box. A ball carrier stands at one end and your linebacker stands at the other. Flip a ball to the ball carrier and the drill begins. The defender tries to get the ball carrier down by any means necessary.
Run Reads
Another important drill should be working your run reads. The type of drill you use will depend on whether you read running backs or linemen. We prefer to read the running backs. For this drill, our linebackers read the first two steps of a back and fire through their gap responsibility. They fit up the running back and run their feet to finish the drill. The focus is to read the key and go fast, not have a big collision.
Strip Drill
Linebacker drills should include a strip drill each day. One ball carrier lines up in front of two defenders. The first defender fits up and secures the tackle. The second defender will rip the ball out of the hands of the ball carrier. He should rip and separate the ball from the runner's body.
Defeating Blocks
Include a drill for defeating blocks every day in your drills. For this, we prefer to use a one-man sled, or popsicle, to work against. That saves wear and tear on our player's bodies and forces excellent form. Players attack the bag from one side, with a ball carrier standing behind the popsicle. They will step with their inside foot strong in the middle of the dummy, and defeat the block by rolling the hips and shooting their inside hand into the middle of the popsicle. The drill finishes by ripping past the sled and fitting up a tackle on the ball carrier. Again, the goal is not a big hit.
Pass Drops
The final skill that our Linebackers must have is dropping back in pass coverage. This drill will involve taking a read step first, and then opening their hips and dropping at a 45 degree angle to their spot. The linebacker must keep his head on a swivel, seeing receivers moving into his area and turning back to read the Quarterback. We will add different elements to the drill including re-routing receivers in the area and intercepting a pass to the area.
These drills are all extremely useful and important in building the best linebackers for your team.
