Youth Football Running Back Drills

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Running back drills are best used to help improve the skill level of your backfield players. A good coach will have a nice variety of drills to use at his practices.

The best backs will be strong runners, blockers and ball receivers. On some rare occasions, the backs are used to pass the ball on a halfback option play or halfback pass. No position in youth football can perform his duties successfully without the help of other players. Every player on the squad improves his abilities through the use of drills.

In addition to being great at running the ball, some backs are known for their prowess at catching passes. The role of the skill back as a receiver out of the backfield has expanded greatly in football over the years, and a versatile halfback who provides his team good running and pass catching abilities is highly valued.

Every aspect of running back techniques you would expect in quality football coaching forum, can be found on various web sites. Included in these quality offensive football web sites are running back drills, midline option football training, developing fullbacks in the fly offense and instructions for the no back offense.

Running backs are considered the top position in all levels of football and with most leagues starting three running backs, it is important to make wise choices. Many teams run a full backfield, Power I, T formation and wishbone set that requires three stud running backs. These power running teams will need to make sure all the backs perform many drills during the week at practice.

The variety of drills need to focus on areas, such as, speed, agility, power running and ball security. Handoffs, with the quarterback, must be practiced at full speed to confirm the timing will be carried over into the games. Do not allow your players to go easy, or half speed, during practice as this will only hurt the team during the game.

Running backs also need to have enough size to block and take repeated hits as a ball carrier. A periodized (structured) sport specific off-season training program is the most effective way to train as a running back.

There are many effective drills that a coach needs to run to improve the blocking skills of the running back. Both the lead block, as well as, the pass protection block must be practiced, and perfected, before games are played.
