My first year of organized football was spent as a tight end. I wasn't a great tight end at all but I liked playing the position. I never had a problem catching the ball prior to that year but once I put the pads on it was a different story. I struggled consistently catching the ball and I lost the trust of my coaches and teammates.
In today's world it would have been easy to find information on the topic but in this case I had to do some real research at a library and I found some great videos that taught some wonderful drills for young receivers and I thought I would share those today.
Foot Ball Drills
1. No routes, just playing catch with pads on: I could catch everything without pads but for some reason I struggled when the pads went on. The first thing I learned I needed to do was get comfortable catching the ball plain and simple. This was easy to practice even if it was a bit boring. Simply standing there playing catch but then I found myself really focusing on some of the fundamentals.
2. Use your hands: One of my issues was that I would let the ball get to my pads instead of just simply catching it with my hands. I learned that in every drill I was doing that I should focus on using my hands to catch every pass. Once I became confident in this area I was a changed receiver.
3. Adjusting to the ball: To do this drill someone stood behind me and threw the ball just over my head. The point was to reach up and catch the ball while looking back over your head or shoulders. By doing this you get used to the flight of the ball and where it will hit on your hands or arms. When nobody could throw the ball to me doing the drill I simply stood next to something that I could bounce the ball off by throwing it back over my head. I would do that over and over again until that became second nature.
By simply doing these 3 simple things I was on my way toward being a good receiver because the most important part about being a good receiver is being able to catch the ball.
